406 N.E. 14th Street

This four square post-World War I style has the typical rigid symmetry of the exterior, the large windows and the uncompromising front entry. This red brick home features a hipped roof with a side porch. The brick fenced and pilastered terrace across the entire front helps to relate the rather severe mass of the house to the site.

Dr. Francis Demand 1925-51
William N. Demand 1952-68
Victoria Butler 1968-77

Dr. Demand and his wife were German immigrants. He was on the staff at St. Anthony's Hospital and had offices in the Colcord Building. Demand cared for most of Oklahoma City's German community, conversing in his native language. Mrs. Demand was an accomplished violinist. She played in concert with Mrs. Frank Buttram at the old First Christian Church on Northwest 10th Street.

In 1952, William Demand took ownership of the house. From a ham operator's set in the northwest section of the city, the younger Mr. Demand and his wife handled teletype messages between families in the U.S. and relatives fighting in Vietnam.
