Master Plan for Landscaping and Neighborhood Beautification

The Master Plan provides a framework for creating a more beautiful and livable neighborhood. It
addresses overall neighborhood appearance as well as specific landscape, hardscape, and
maintenance objectives. It is intended to be implemented over a five year span, beginning
September 2017.

Elements:

Lindsay Street Medians

Objective: create an overall coherent design that increases beauty, improves plant health
requires simple straightforward maintenance, and invites residents and visitors to enjoy the
green corridor.

Action steps:
Remove diseased, damaged, and undesirable trees and shrubs
Plant overstory trees, evergreens, flowering trees, shrubs, and ground covers; mass trees of the
same variety where possible; differentiate median character in some cases
Install mulch rings around each tree; connect the rings; plant with ground cover and shrubs
Delete unnecessary signs; modify others where possible
Implement appropriate scheduled maintenance
Add marked bike lanes
Add sidewalks
Add irrigation

Strategies:
Obtain Parks Department approval; adopt specific areas (coordinate with OKC Beautiful)
Obtain trees through Tree Bank Foundation and Margaret Annis Boys Foundation
Obtain trees, plants, and materials through donation from landscape suppliers, when possible
Coordinate efforts with Councilman Pettis and City of Oklahoma City Planning, Public Works,
and Parks and Recreation staffs (collectively: City)

Nichols Park

Objectives: maintain and enhance existing design with no major modifications.

Action steps:
Replace dead and missing shrubs
Schedule regular maintenance

Strategy:
Meet with representatives of the Medical Community Neighborhood to plan, design, and
implement

Overall

Objective: Beautify the streetscape and improve walkability.

Action steps:
Coordinate with residents to plant street trees
Provide curb cleanup and grooming once a year
Work with City to repair curbs
Work with City to add sidewalks
Work with City and City Police to reduce traffic speed
Reduce street parking

Strategies:
Negotiate a reduced price for select street trees; plan a neighborhood tree planting event
Install temporary digital speed signs

Year One, September 2017-August 2018

Adopt neighborhood entry medians, plant and enhance:
NE 13th-14th; NE 19th-NE 21st
Also, add redbud trees to endcaps on both medians at Culbertson and Lindsay

Schedule:
September 2017
Clean out and replant beds
Add Taylor junipers and redbuds
Remove damaged, diseased, and undesirable trees (grind stumps)
Add mulch rings under remaining trees
Remove signs
Begin setting aside funds for irrigation
Work with City to repair and update faucets in all medians
Overall curb cleanup before home tour
Contact OU Faculty House about planting trees at 14th Street parking lot

February-March 2018
Add overstory trees in adopted medians
Schedule first neighborhood street tree planning event
Include Faculty House in tree planting event

April 2018
Refresh mulch as needed

Non-specific dates
Install traffic speed indicator on selected streets
Meet with representatives of Medical Neighborhood to discuss coordination on Nichols Park
Create and maintain watering schedule
Contact all entities regarding noxious signs
Remove, redesign, relocate signs

Year Two, September 2018-August 2019

Adopt medians between NE 14th Street and Culbertson Drive

Schedule:

Remove damaged, diseased, and undesirable trees (grind stumps)
Add mulch rings under remaining trees
Extend and enhance berms; plant with evergreens
Re-place rocks in a naturalistic design
Overall curb cleanup before home tour

February-March 2019
Plant overstory trees
Plant redbuds and/or other flowering trees
Schedule second neighborhood street tree planting event

April 2019
Refresh mulch
Non-specific dates
Begin discussions with City about sidewalk expansion
Continue funding for irrigation
Make improvements to Nichols Park in conjunction with Medical Community
Create and maintain watering schedule
Year Three, September 2019-August 2020
Adopt medians between Culbertson Drive and NE 19th Street
