With severe weather season right around the corner, the American Red Cross of Central and Western Oklahoma is working to ensure our volunteer relief workers are trained and ready to respond should a disaster occur in our community. On Saturday, March 1, the American Red Cross will be conducting a disaster preparedness exercise in our neighborhood.
The exercise involves simulating tornado damage by placing small signs with pictures of damaged homes along the sidewalk in front of homes. American Red Cross volunteers will then assess the level of damage to the home simulated by the sign. In a real disaster, this assessment is used to determine the type of Red Cross humanitarian services that will be provided to the victims of disaster.
The exercise will take place between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM and no action will be needed on your part. The signs will be placed in yards, along the sidewalk, at 8:00 AM and retrieved by volunteers that afternoon.
Volunteers will be easily identified by Red Cross vests, and they have been instructed to not walk on lawns or impede traffic.
